Does Carpet Cleaning Remove Pet Odor? | Brooke’s Chem-Dry Leavenworth
Standard carpet cleaning reduces surface smell. P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) removes the source. Here is the honest difference.
The Honest Answer: It Depends on the Method
Standard carpet cleaning cleans the carpet fibers. It removes surface soil, reduces light odors, and freshens a room that just smells like an old house. For light pet odor that has not penetrated into the backing or pad, it can help.
For pet urine odor, the answer is usually no. Pet urine contains uric acid. Uric acid crystallizes as it dries and bonds to carpet fibers and the backing beneath. Standard cleaning applies water and suction to the surface. It does not break down uric acid. In many cases it temporarily rehydrates the crystals, which can make the smell worse before it fades. When the humidity rises, the odor returns. The only treatment that addresses the source is one designed to break down uric acid chemically. That is what P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) does.

Still Have Pet Odor After a Cleaning?
If you have had the carpet cleaned and the smell came back, standard cleaning was not the right tool. Call us. P.U.R.T. treats what standard cleaning cannot reach.
How Brooke’s Chem-Dry Removes Pet Odor
- Locate all affected areas. We inspect the carpet beyond the visible stain. Urine spreads wider than what is visible on the surface and soaks into the backing. We identify the full affected zone before treating.
- Apply P.U.R.T. P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) is applied to the affected zone. The solution penetrates through carpet fibers, backing, and into the pad area where the uric acid has bonded.
- Dwell time. We allow P.U.R.T. to work through the layers before extraction. This is what separates it from a surface spray.
- Hot Carbonating Extraction. We clean the area with our low-moisture process, using about 80% less water than traditional steam cleaning. The treatment and the broken-down deposits are extracted together.
- Final check. We review the result with you. Severe deposits may need a second treatment. We will tell you what to expect before we leave.
Pet Odor Removal Questions
I just had my carpet cleaned and the pet smell came back. Why?
Standard carpet cleaning rehydrates uric acid crystals bonded to the backing and pad, which can temporarily reduce the odor. When the carpet dries fully and humidity rises again, the smell returns because the source was never removed. P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) is the treatment for this. Call us at (913) 351-3508. We treat the source, not the surface.
Can P.U.R.T. be added to a standard carpet cleaning visit?
Yes. P.U.R.T. is a separate treatment from standard cleaning and is priced accordingly. If you are scheduling a carpet cleaning and have pet urine odor, tell us when you call. We will quote and treat everything in the same visit so you are not paying for a second appointment.
Does P.U.R.T. work on furniture and rugs too?
Yes. P.U.R.T. is available for carpet, area rugs, and upholstery. If your pet has used more than one surface, we treat all of them in a single visit. Treating carpet while leaving a sofa or area rug untreated means the odor source remains in the room.
How soon after treatment will the odor be gone?
The odor typically reduces immediately and continues to decrease as the carpet dries. Full results are apparent once the area is completely dry, usually within 1 to 2 hours. For severe or deeply saturated deposits, a follow-up may be needed. We will tell you during the inspection if that is likely.
